Shaun,a true intelligent gentleman, great surfer. Surfed south mission jetty San Diego next to him in the mid 80s and met him personally with my son about 5 or 6 years ago at the 100 wave challenge at mission beach San Diego.

I was out at The Con early 80's it was shoulder to about 2' over head around the river mouth I pulled into the real nice long barrel and as I'm in there I see this guy just stopped paddling and put his hands on the front of his board with this real big smile and just watching it was Shaun -- paddled back out he smiled and nodded at me, made my day. The guy always put out good/great vibes not like some pro's...

I thank God I grew up in this era too, before slashing and tricks was the way, when Surfers were Artists drawing lines and flowing with the Ocean, not trying to kill it. Nothing is better than carving lines except those moments in the tube. Today's surfers, have fun. But when you see the STYLE of an artist on a wave, like my beloved Jericho did too in her day, it cannot be beat by aerials.

Not sure what year (late 80's or early 90's) I was returning from the Hollister Ranch just before dark with a buddy (by car) and we were driving by Razor Blades (Winter, Massive swell) and there were quite a few boats anchored-up and a number of guys in the water still catching these double overhead rights; one stood out though. Shaun was tearing the wave apart and it wasn't until later that night at the Chart house in Santa Barbara (now closed), we found out the name of the bloke that "owned Razors". He got a bit of a bad rep at Rincon for being a snake, but I tip my hat to this bloke from SA ! Great memories; I still think of you that night ripping Razors. Cheers, mate. Liked, subscribed Funniest part ? Dan Merkel lived in a tiny house just down from the Cliffhouse where I used to live in the 70's. Your commentary in the lighthouse episode (West of the West) is brilliant.

Short board pioneers like him figured out how to do what surfers today take for granted as common knowledge. To do all that without someone telling him to ride or learning by seeing waves being ridden that way shows how smart and brave he was. No you tube videos. Just guts, brains and creativity.

Very cool..he's pretty heroic...my wife was a casting director on a film in Gods Hands back in the 90's I think..we met him in Hawaii. She was a Palisades gal..surfed her whole life...died back in 2014...too soon. She was a really good longboarder...old school...slim, tan..the epitome of a surfer girl from the 60's/70's...she could really slide clean on a wave...

0:10 Thomson may have ridden J bay better than anyone else before but definitely not since. These days a 14 year old on a modern board could outperform whatThomson did back then, and the kid would just be an average grom.

The way he delivered that last line at the end seems so candidly heartfelt. He's always been among the most stylish and distinctive surfers ever. Back in 70s and 80s you could easily identify the top guys by style alone. I dare you to do that today with the compulsive slash and burn approach which is more rape than love making and seems more geared to win points in competition than to have fun, which surfing is really all about in the first place.

I still remember in the early 80's my friends and I would see Shaun at Rincon surfing and we would try and drop in real fast and kick out on the same wave as him so we could go back to school and say we surfed a wave with Shaun Thompson. Funny when I think back. Shaun was always such a nice guy in the water back when we were kids. Nice to see him still ripping.

  • @tosoviti6121

Hi Shaun …you’ll wanna read this…do you remember being left stranded by your boat captain on Lakeba island in Fiji during the Fiji Quiksilver tour in the 90’s? Do you remember that Fijian boy at the boat jetty that took you and your companions to his house and you gave his mother some SA Rand because you guys had only foreign currency and bank cards at the time? That Fijian boy is my best friend and we live in New Zealand now. He is actually one of the highest chiefs in the Lau Island group. His name is Tevita/David(or sometimes known by his chiefly title, Ratu, and his uncle was actually the Fijian president at the time, Ratu Mara. He remembers taking you to the airport and the flight was cancelled due to a plane crash, so he billeted you all at his house, called Lolopaogo. I showed him a video of you and he recognised you instantly. He said you were the only one who would not drink alcohol and remembered you are of Jewish heritage. And his mother made fried fish for all of you. She has sadly since passed away. He said you guys gave him a bunch of your gear when you left. He never forgot you and when he told me the story, I had to try to connect you two. He sends you his best regards. “Ni sa bula vinaka , Shaun.. Kalougata jiko” It means: “Greetings, life and health, Shaun. Bless you.” Thanks Shaun Tim (I’m from Illovo Beach, originally)
